  • Topic: Wrap-up

The Master Plan will only be as effective as its ability to be implemented and referenced. That's why it is so important for education stakeholders (all citizens) to be involved with and knowlegeable of the Master Plan. The process for creating it has attempted to address the issue of inclusivity precisely for that reason. Otherwise all of the efforts put forth over the last 2 plus years by many people will be for naught.

Legislative efforts on behalf of our students and schools in the past 6 years have been disconnected and somewhat ineffective on many fronts. The Master Plan is an attempt to bring cohesion to the legislative process. If embraced by the Legislature and the Administration, the Plan will provide a blueprint for future policy-making. We need a well-planned system of education for our students and it is through the lens of their needs that we should be looking when we legislate.

Due to term limits I am forced to leave the legislature this year, but as a private citizen and educator I will be watching the progress of the Plan and participating in its implementation by contacting my representatives and advocates.

Legislators and other policy-makers need to listen to those whom they expect to implement their policies. I believe the Master Plan has provided that opportunity for feedback and discussion. A permanent website for continued dialogue would be ideal. Annual hearings througout the state would also help evaluate progress and bring up concerns. On-going communication will be key to the success of the Master Plan. All of us must share that responsibility for the sake of our students.
