The discussion of student learning and standards-based instruction has overlooked a vital resource, that of the library media teacher working in collaboration with the classroom teacher to bolster student achievement. The LMT brings considerable expertise to the school learning environment, one which all to often is dismissed as the clerk who checks the books out.

The library media teacher has responsiblility to teach to a rigorous set of information literacy standards as well as to focus on reading technology literacy. She has been trained to work collaboratively with classroom teachers in resource-based instruction and is frequently the most capable instructor in the building.

More attention needs to be focused on the value that LMTs can bring to standards-based instruction.
