  • Topic: Wrap-up

I would like to return to a subject that was briefly discussed on Day Two - educating our students to be active citizens in a democracy. Eleanor Lee introduced the subject well, and Marilyn Langlois and John Vasconcellos had good responces. The Master Plan says that effective learning will produce people who know how to 1) know how to be active citizens and 2) can achieve the quality of life they desire; so we see active citizenship as core.

I want to say this doesn't just happen. Our whole cirriculum K-12 must incorporate training in active, participatory citizenship. I also want to add that learning to vote is the most simple form of citizenship. This training needs to include how to participate between elections. For instance, write representatives, monitor legislation, learn about and attend local councils agencies and boards.

Citizenship training should be a fundamental, inseparable part of our whole cirriculum.
