I agree that people value things by approximately what they cost, education should not be free. I would suggest however that education, including and especially UC education ought to be made available on the web to taxpayers for a subscription free.

That is, there are many excellent courses taught and recorded. One ought to be able to order a DVD of a math, engineering or history course from, say, UC Berkeley at the cost of say $100-$200. This would be non-credential, non-degree, just self study. A commercial entity, the teaching company, already does this:

I don't see why courses that are already filmed or taped shouldn't be made available. DVD and CD burners are cheap these days and I personally want access to the education my tax dollars pays for.
