Recommendation 25: "Require the development of articulation processes to provide students with clear curricular and career guidance about the transition from high schools, colleges, and universities to employment" does NOT go far enough towards advocating career preparation for all students. All educational institutions should integrate career preparation in their curricula for all students, including academic courses. Unfortunately, the UC A-G requirements seem to be driving the decisions that are made in California about the high school curriculum despite the fact that, as Senator McPherson pointed out, very few students in our schools will actually matriculate to a 4 year college or university. The best way to prepare students for their working lives is to have all students complete a career pathway program that starts in 9th grade and continues through 12th grade with the option to change pathways as needed and in consultation with the parent and counselor. Our high school counselors need additional preparation in career guidance and support for these activities. School to career programs, partnership academies, and ROCPs are all partners in this system who can assist high schools in developing a variety of career pathway programs that will prepare students for both college and careers.
