The University of California uses "lecturer" to suggest temporary status, when, in fact, a huge number of lecturers are long-term faculty performing all sorts of jobs absolutely integral to the health of undergraduate education. My observations are that some of the very best teaching is being done by faculty whose status as lecturers prevents them from informing educational policy, serving on Academic Senate committees, and sharing their pedagogical expertise with "permanent" faculty. UC would be a stronger institution if it made better use of these educators who are often engaged in the scholarship of teaching. Our outreach efforts would also be more credible if we promoted more honest dialogue about teaching at the university level.
