There are several reasons for advancing the elimination of extra weight being assigned to the completion of AP courses. First, the Master Plan is advocating increased rigor in the entire curriculum at all public schools. This should both decrease demand for remedial instruction for those HS graduates who choose to go on to a college or university and advance the concept of a "level playing field" with respect to university admissions. It makes no sense to expect more of only those students who are assumed to be headed to college and something less for those students headed for non-college options. Colleges and universities can still grant college credit for students completing AP coursework AND earning sufficiently high scores on the AP exam to warrant such credit. Third, the elimination of assigning extra weight to AP course will eliminated the competitive advantage of students graduating from some schools to present GPA's in excess of 4.0, on a 4 point scale, due solely to diffential availability of AP courses.
