I think it's important that K-12 curriculum be set in CONJUNCTION with post secondary education, but not by it. For example, when my son wrote an essay in 8th grade to get into an honor's English program in 9th grade, it was an analytical essay because "that's what is required to get in to the UC system". Consequently a very large portion of the 9-11 high school writing is learning to do analytical essays to meet UC and SAT needs. Very little time seems to be spent on other genres, much to the dissatisfaction of both teachers and students.
