RE: citizenship in a democracy
ELEANOR LEE - I AGREE WITH YOUR - What troubles me about the draft . . is that we are not asking how we educate our students for citizenship in a democracy. How do we teach them to think critically and ethically, to challenge demagoguery, to value and contribute to their society in ways that are not just monetary? 'I don't have an easy answer, but I think these questions need to be asked. I am thinking more of a deeper study of history, literature, philosophy, religion.' I WOULD ONLY ADD THAT AGAIN, WE MUST APPROACH, ENVISION, THE LEARNING PROCESS AS 'LEARNING FROM THE INSIDE OUT' - HOW WE APPROACH A CHILD AT THE RELATIONSHIP LEVEL, SO AS TO PROVIDE EACH CHILD THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING DEMOCRATICALY - STUDYING STUFF VIA THE INTELLECT WILL NEVER MATCH THE RAW FORCE AND RESULT OF HOW AND WHETHER A CHILD GROWS TO APPRECIATE DEMOCRACY, BY BEING INVITED TO LIVE AND EXPERIENCE DEMOCRACY. |
