[This concept of Ford affiliation Internet program for its employees is also
being extended by some companies to take Fiber to the Home. AT&T and TCI
have recently established separate business divisions to build fiber
networks for municipalities and large corporate clients. Corporations
purchase a percentage of a fiber build so that employees can have direct
high speed connections to the head office. Tektronix in Oregon is one
example of a company that has undertaken such an arrangement with TCI. In
addition to purchasing a managed dark fiber service from TCI to connect up a
variety of labs and offices, additional fiber and cable modem services were
acquired for employee connections. - BSA]
Weighing the Value of Ford PC's
At a time when the traditional bonds between employees and
companies are loosening and a growing share of the economy's
work is done by freelance, part-time and temporary workers,
Ford took a giant step in the other direction when it
announced that it would offer each of its 350,000 employees
a computer, printer and unlimited Internet access for $5 a
month. Ô
