Common Knowledge Recommended Software & Updates
This web page has been developed to provide Common Knowledge: Pittsburgh school sites with the latest software updates for Internet applications, as well as some additional software add-ons that may prove to be to be useful for some. Some of these applications can be found directly on your school's server and can easily be accessed by using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to download these applications. This page contains detailed instructions as to what the programs do, how to access them, download them, and install them on your computers. For those programs that are not located on the schools' servers, a direct link to that file on the Internet will be provided to facilitate easy downloading.
To download a file from the Internet, simply click on the link and you will be prompted to save the file to your hard disk. The best thing to do is to save this file to a temporary directory on your hard disk. Then, double-click on the file. This will either run the installation program, or extract several other files. If the latter happens, then look for the file called "setup.exe" or "install.exe" and double-click on it to run the installation program. If the file is saved with the ZIP extension, then you need to use a zipping/unzipping utility to extract the installation and run the "setup.exe" or "install.exe" file. To download an unzipping utility, look for the link below for the operating system you are using and click on it to save the program to your hard disk. After you install this program, use it to unzip the previously downloaded program.
To download a file from your school server, login via a telnet session to your server. Then, type in the "cd", then SPACE and the path to which the file is located (the paths to each of the files location is shown in the appropriate table below). For example, if you wish to download a Windows 95 file, simply type "cd /home/ftp/pub/win95" and press Enter. Now, type "cp", then SPACE, then the name of the file. This will copy the file to your home directory on the server. Now, you need to use ws_FTP to download that file to your hard disk. For instructions on how to download a file from your home directory to your hard disk, click here. Then, double-click on the file. This will either run the installation program, or extract several other files. If the latter happens, then look for the file called "setup.exe" or "install.exe" and double-click on it to run the installation program. If the file is saved with the ZIP extension, then you need to use a zipping/unzipping utility to extract the installation files and run the "setup.exe" or "install.exe" file. To download an unzipping utlitity, click here. After downloading this file to the same directory as the other file(s) you downloaded, go to a DOS prompt and type "unzip", SPACE, then the name of the file you downloaded (i.e.: "unzip lviewpro.zip"). Then, run "setup.exe" or "install.exe" and install the program.
