CK:P Servers
CK:P network information servers utilize a variety of
hardware platforms and operating systems. We are
currently supporting and deploying the following platform combinations:
- NetBSD on Pentium PC
- Ultrix on DECStation 5000
- Digital Unix on DEC Alpha Workstations
- Solaris on Sun SparcStation
Each server supports a broad range of
networking software drawn from the public domain. Below is
a description of the hardware platforms and operating systems currently
supported by the project.
Operating Systems
- NetBSD
This is our platform of choice for low-cost and easy porting of
networking applications. NetBSD is a public domain version of the Unix
operating system maintained by
a large group of volunteers. It includes very stable networking
code and adheres closely to the Berkeley Unix specification.
While we are currently deploying this operating system on Pentium
PC's, however this operating system will run on many other hardware
platforms.
- DEC Ultrix. This operating system is shipped
with the popular DEC-5000 series of workstations. These servers provided
the foundation for our Year 1 site network information servers. The DS5000's
are no longer in production, and Ultrix is not supported on newer DEC
hardware.
- Digital Unix on Alpha Workstations. This operating
system, previously referred to as OSF-1, is shipped with the DEC Alpha
line of workstations.
- Sun Solaris. This is the operating system shipped
with all Sun SPARCstations.
Hardware Platforms
- Pentium PC We are currently ordering DEC Celebris XL
590 PC's for our NetBSD based server. This model includes a 90 MHz
microprocessor, 256KB
cache, 8 MB RAM, 3.5" 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive, PS/2 101-keyboard and
a 3 button mouse. We augment this configuration with: 32 MB Ram (two
16 MB RAM Simms), 2.1 GB SCSI hard drive, DEC ethernet interface,
trident 512K ISA Video Card. Since the server is primarily used
for remote logins, it only requires an inexpensive monitor. The Celebris
includes a SCSI bus which is necessary for adding SCSI peripherals,
such as disks, to the server. Other models used include Gateway (XXX)
and Vektron (XXX).
- Alpha Workstation
Alpha Workstations were ordered as servers for the DEC based
Year 2 sites. We ordered a DEC Alpha Workstation (DEC3000-300)
with 32 MB memory, RX25L 533 MB disk, 2 Turbo slots, and a 10BT ethernet
interface. We augmented this configuration with a 1 GB hard drive
(for a total of 1.5GB disk space), 4.0 GB 4MM DAT tape drive, and
a white paper monitor. Since the server console is only used for
maintenance and console message, an inexpensive monitor was purchased.
