Mrs. Ella Smith, aged 32 years, of No. 100 Grant avenue, North Side, was badly frightened this morning about 11 o'clock by a fire horse which broke away from Fireman James Briceley, of No. 41 engine house, when the horse was being exercised. Mrs. Smith was walking along Martin street, North Side, when Fireman Briceley, who was riding one horse and leading the other passed her.
Just as the fireman and the horses passed, the horse which Fireman Briceley was leading, broke away and ran back toward Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith ran in the yard of Mrs. F. K. Herd, No. 431 Martin street, North Side, and screamed and called for help. The horse it seems followed her up to the yard gate. Mrs. Herd took Mrs. Smith in the house and when she recovered from her fright, she went home. Fireman Briceley caught the horse again and took the animal to the fire station. The horse is not a vicious animal and the fireman said it followed Mrs. Smith thinking it might get something to eat, as this horse is often fed by children and women.
