What Time Periods & Areas Do You Cover?

WPGS' collection spans the early 1750s through the early part of the 20th Century, in books, microfilm, microfiche and shortly, in CD-ROM formats. It covers the area now known as Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia and Western Maryland.

Whether your ancestors passed through Western Pennsylvania, stayed in the region for a few generations, or made it their permanent home, they may have left records; and we can help you find them!

Why Attend the Meetings?

We offer a series of informative and entertaining programs with speakers who KNOW their subjects, and can help you develop your knowledge of genealogical resources for your family's history.

It's motivating to meet and socialize with people who have shared the same research problem, who have "been there...done that."

How Do I Start on My Family History?

Everyone in this hobby started with the same uncertainties and questions. We can provide "How To" answers to "How do you start...Where do you look?"

Education Classes give you the basics--the Hows to solve your initial problems with the Five Ws: Who, What, When, Where and Why.

What Do You Offer the Out-of-Town Member?

Our international members and members in every state in the Union use our publications, the capabilities of our Library Research Committee and even our Special Interest Groups to further their family research. Our speakers' topics are covered in JOTS, our monthly newsletter. We continue to cover all 26 counties of Western Pennsylvania.

What Does Your New Location within The Pennsylvania Department
of The Carnegie Library Mean to Me?

Almost one-stop regional genealogical research. The WPGS collection complements and augments the Pennsylvania Department's enormous holdings. It means our Library Research Committee has more onsite resources to consult for out-of-town queries.

Can I Search the WPGS Collection Electronically?

You can't fax, email or voice mail us...YET.

We're computerizing certain functions. So is the Pennsylvania Department. We are working on it, because we realize that your ability to access information is extremely important to successful genealogical research!
