William G. Bergmann: Note

In doing some rsearch, I happened upon the page marked "Soldiers of the Great War." Listed as having been killed in action under "Privates" was William G. Bergmann of Honsedale. William G. Bergmann was my grandfather. Although he was severely injured in France and reported as dead, he did not die. He returned to the United States, married, settled in Binghamton, New York, and raised five children. He died in October 1965. As the story passed down to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren goes: when he returned from the War on crutches, he was met by my great grandmother, Katherine Bergmann, who asked him to read a telegram that she had received from the War Department regretfully informing her that her son, Private William G. Bergmann had been killed in action. Since it was in English and she only spoke German, she had never read it. Needless to say, upon reading it himself, my grandfather declined.
