How, Where & When
The Pennsylvania Department welcomes questions and comments by mail, phone, email and fax. Located on the 2nd floor of the Main Branch of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, we are open to the public the same hours as the Library. The Carnegie Library is located in Oakland, Pittsburgh's Civic Center, on Forbes Avenue across from the University of Pittsburgh's academic skyscraper, the Cathedral of Learning.
The Pennsylvania Department is a special collection within a public library environment. Many of our materials are fragile and unique. Our resources--books, clippings, microfilm, photographs, manuscripts--represent a wealth of information on the history of Western Pennsylvania. Our genealogical resources can be useful to the novice investigator as well as to the experienced researcher. The Pennsylvania Department shares its quarters with the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society (WPGS) whose resources are available to the public.
Parking for Library patrons is available in the Institute's multi-story garage (entrance at Forbes Avenue and Craig Street, across from the Uni-Mart convenience store). A municipal parking lot is located off of Forbes Avenue between Carnegie Library and Hillman Library (University of Pittsburgh).
