Gifts to the Pennsylvania Department

The Pennsylvania Department, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, welcomes gifts of photographs that document Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. These gifts supplement and enhance the Pittsburgh Photographic Library (PPL), the Department's core collection of images.

The photographs in PPL, numbering nearly 60,000 prints, have been reproduced in books, periodicals and videos. They have been studied by scholars world-wide. And, they hang proudly on the walls of the homes of Pittsburghers near and far away.

Whenever reproduced, credit is given to The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. If the donor so chooses, an additional citation can be included in the credit line.

The normal procedure for making any donation would first be to contact the Pennsylvania Department. Arrangements can often be made, if the photographs are local, for our staff to pick them up. Of course the gift can also be brought directly to the library.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh does not appraise photographs or put a cash value on the images that are given to the collections. While the Library does provide a letter of thanks, acknowledging the gift, it is the responsibility of the donor to assess the value of the gift, if he or she so chooses, for any tax purposes.

The Pittsburgh Photographic Library houses the work of some of America's notable photographers, including James Blair, Esther Bubley, Harold Corsini, Arnold Eagle, Elliott Erwitt, Regina Fisher, Clyde Hare, George Hetrick, Charles Jacques, Russell Lee, Sol Libsohn, Charles Nelson, Fran Nestler, Richard Saunders and Luke Swank, to name just a few.
This would be a noble company for your photographs to join--ensuring their preservation for the entertainment and instruction of future generations of Western Pennsylvanians.
