Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D)

New York, Eighth Congressional District

Currently serving his fourth full term in the House of Representatives, Jerrold Nadler represents New York's Eighth Congressional district, which includes parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. During his tenure, he has proven himself a leading advocate on transportation issues, a vigorous fighter for maintaining the Social Security system, and one of Congress's most insistent champions of federal support for the arts and humanities. During the impeachment process, Rep. Nadler was an outspoken defender of the constitution and opponent of the President's impeachment. He is the author of legislation to rein in HMOs, to ensure women's access to preventive health services, and to protect the availability of seniors' health care. In addition, he serves as a Regional Democratic Whip, and is Co-Chair of the House Transit Caucus. Representative Nadler serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which considers crucial transportation and economic development questions. Representative Nadler serves on the Surface Transportation and the Oversight, Investigations and Emergency Management Subcommittees. He has long fought to restore the New York region's industrial economy, provide blue collar jobs and reduce the tax burden on all New Yorkers by restoring manufacturing, improving the region's rail freight distribution network, and revitalizing the Port of New York.

Representative Nadler also serves on the House Judiciary Committee. There, in addition to his outspoken position on impeachment, he has been a leader in the fight for individual rights, the fight for religious freedom, and the fight against crime. He co-sponsored the assault weapons ban as well as legislation to prevent violence against women and to outlaw bias crimes. In addition, he has been the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, which is responsible for such key issues as consumer protection, bankruptcy law, and the right of all Americans to competent legal representation. He has also served on the Constitution Subcommittee. Due to his work as an avid supporter of intellectual and artistic freedom, he has received Broadway's prestigious "Star Award," presented by the League of American Theaters and Producers, and the "Hero's Award," presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He has also been honored by the New York Artists Equity Association.

Prior to serving in Congress, Rep. Nadler served in the New York State Assembly, where he was the author of most of the State's body of law on domestic violence and child support enforcement. He was the first male to be named Assemblymember of the Year by the National Organization for Women (NOW). In addition, as founder and first chairman of the Assembly's Subcommittee on Mass Transit and Rail Freight, he has been considered an expert in these fields for many years.

Representative Nadler is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University and Fordham Law School. He was born in Brooklyn, spent part of his childhood on a farm in New Jersey, and then returned to Brooklyn for the remainder of his childhood. He now lives on Manhattan's West Side with his wife, Joyce Miller, and their son.
