Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D)New York, Eighth Congressional District
Representative Nadler also serves on the House Judiciary Committee. There, in addition to his outspoken position on impeachment, he has been a leader in the fight for individual rights, the fight for religious freedom, and the fight against crime. He co-sponsored the assault weapons ban as well as legislation to prevent violence against women and to outlaw bias crimes. In addition, he has been the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, which is responsible for such key issues as consumer protection, bankruptcy law, and the right of all Americans to competent legal representation. He has also served on the Constitution Subcommittee. Due to his work as an avid supporter of intellectual and artistic freedom, he has received Broadway's prestigious "Star Award," presented by the League of American Theaters and Producers, and the "Hero's Award," presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He has also been honored by the New York Artists Equity Association. Prior to serving in Congress, Rep. Nadler served in the New York State Assembly, where he was the author of most of the State's body of law on domestic violence and child support enforcement. He was the first male to be named Assemblymember of the Year by the National Organization for Women (NOW). In addition, as founder and first chairman of the Assembly's Subcommittee on Mass Transit and Rail Freight, he has been considered an expert in these fields for many years. Representative Nadler is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University and Fordham Law School. He was born in Brooklyn, spent part of his childhood on a farm in New Jersey, and then returned to Brooklyn for the remainder of his childhood. He now lives on Manhattan's West Side with his wife, Joyce Miller, and their son.
