Why Reform Now?


Congressman Xavier Becerra (D)

Representative Xavier Becerra (D-California) was first elected to represent California's 30th Congressional District in November 1992. The district is located in the City of Los Angeles and several of the communities represented include: Atwater Village, Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, Hollywood, Echo Park, El Sereno, Elysian Park, Elysian Valley, Glassel Park, Highland Park, Koreatown, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills, Mount Washington, and Silver Lake.

Rep. Becerra currently serves on the House Ways and Means Committee. As a member of this committee, he handles such issues as social security, tax policy and oversight of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through his participation on the panel's Subcommittee on Trade, Rep. Becerra plays a critical role in formulating policies concerning tariffs, customs, exports, and reciprocal trade agreements. Given that trade is the engine that drives the Californian economy, Rep. Becerra is in a unique position to serve the needs of our state. Rep. Becerra is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Prior to his election to Congress in 1992, Rep. Becerra served one term in the California Legislature as the representative of the 59th Assembly District in Los Angeles County.

Rep. Becerra is a former Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice. He commenced his legal career in 1984 working in a legal services office representing the mentally ill.

In 1980, Rep. Becerra earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University. He was awarded his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in 1984.

Currently, Rep. Becerra serves on the following Boards: Los Angeles Annenberg Metropolitan Project (LAAMP), Pitzer College, Close Up Foundation, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), and National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).

Rep. Becerra is married to Dr. Carolina Reyes (Stanford '81, Harvard '87), an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at George Washington University Medical School. The couple has three daughters, Clarisa, Olivia and Natalia.
