PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN EPA DECISIONS

A National Dialogue convened by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
and hosted by Information Renaissance
with additional support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation


Alfonso J. Evans, Sr.

Al is a retired educator and member of the Charleston's Westside Neighborhood Association. He formerly served as Chairman of the Charleston/North Charleston Community-Based Environmental Protection Community Advisory Group.

In 1991, Al retired after 33 years in public education in the State of South Carolina. He has worked as a teacher of science and biology, high school principal, football coach and assistant director of guidance and testing in the local education system. Al has also served as Program Supervisor with the SC State Department of Education's Division of Public Accountability and the Office of Planning. In 1997, Al volunteered to serve as Chairman of the Charleston/North Charleston Community-Based Environmental Protection Community Advisory Group composed of representatives of local neighborhood associations, businesses and industries, institutions of higher education, local organizations and concerned citizens. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the SC State Budget and Control Board Retirement and Pre-Retirement Advisory Board and Vice-Chairman of the Deacons' Ministry of the Morris Street Baptist Church.

Al holds a B.S. degree in Biology and a M.A. in Education from South Carolina State University and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of South Carolina. He has received the outstanding State Employee Award from the SC State Employees Association and the prestigious Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, Coastal Carolina Council. In 2000, Al was inducted into the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a member of Mu Alpha Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Al is married to the former Angie Holmes. He is the father of 2 sons and 2 daughters. He has 8 grandchildren.
