"The issue is CCA treated wood."

Wood is also treated with pentachlorophenol. Pentachlorophenol is the largest source of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in the country, because it is contaminated with them during manufacture. Wood preserving put out 25 times the amount of dioxin as municipal waste incinerators, the second largerst source, in 1995. [Source: EPA Inventory of Dioxin Sources].

I don't see anyone at EPA doing anything about this, and I can only assume that wood preservers got some exemption at some time in the past and have been ignored since then. I fully expect treated wood to become yet another deadly scandal, complete with clidren getting cancer, people asking why EPA did nothing, and EPA, in response, writing draft guidance to the wood preserving industry telling them to inform the public about the hazards of dioxin in a pamphlet in small print to be included with each child's wooden swing set.

In the meantime, don't buy treated wood products, and don't let your child play on them.
