Hello Andrea:
I am the Co-chair (community chmn) of the Picatinny Arsenal
Restoration Advisory Board in New Jersey. Is there another
Picatinny Arsenal in your neighborhood?
Our Picatinny does have, in my opinion, significant water
contamination problems - PCBs, etc. Our arsenal sits above
3 major aquifers which service all of the communities adjacent
to it.
Prior to the existence of our RAB, there was only a Technical Review Committee. At that time I and the other community representatives asked that water sampling data from the arsenal's boundary be provided to the Health depts. of the adjacent communities. This was initially done. In addition, several arsenal employee unions were very vocal about expressing their concern about their drinking water quality. This prompted us to include a union employee representative on the TRC. He is a capable individual with, I believe a PhD, who has remained with us on the RAB even though he is now retired.
Since then several of the onsite wells have been closed and additional water purification measures have allegedly been taken. Several adjacent residences and at least one business were provided bottled water initially and then they were attached to the public water system of a nearby community.
Frankly, I and others are still concerned about the contaminants
in the aquifers beneath the arsenal - and about the determination
of the relevant environmental authorities to take the appropriate
environmental remediation measures.
If you have additional information then please don't hesitate to
inform me.
Michael
