I agree that there is a need for many versions, not a single plan. Education in CA serves EVERY PERSON in the state: infants, children, parents/adults, and grandparents. It must address the needs of all learners which are incredibly diverse. A plan based on a business model that addresses the production of one product or outcome can't work. I think, at best, the Master Plan can provide a continum of guidelines offering multiple options for teaching and assessing diverse learners and educators. Districts can then use the plan to develop locally viable education plans by selecting appropriate options. As a special education teacher for children with severe disabilities, I have generated thousands of pages of eduspeak documents to prove that I am addressing the state standards in teaching my children (to do such things as wash their hands). The time wasted on all those pages that are filed somewhere never to be seen again could have been better spent in developing lessons and materials for my students. I hope the Master Plan will provide realistic guidelines for all in the education profession.
