  • Topic: Wrap-up

It seems to me that we are in for a great ride if we do our homework right. The discussion on the Education plan has been very rewarding and productive. In terms of areas to hang on to if the plan goes forward, I believe that we must not let go the issue of accountability. It is key and will make significant contributions to our future educational progress and advancement in California. Similarly, the provision of quality education environment must not be compromised in any way. Students need an enabling environment to succeed in learning. In many other ways, teachers do too. This environment must, therefore, be provided by everyone involved--including themselves! In addition to these, the provision and applications of appropriate technology in every classroom are in place. We must not only think of what technology to provide to teachers and students, but also do our best to see to it that any available technology is put to its best us.

To the question: Who should be accountable?, it is my belief that everyone who has participated in the discussion will agree that we all must be held accountable--teachers, administrators, parents, politicians, students, and others--that is, every Californian!!!! As long as everyone owns the plan and works towards its implementation and operation, our combined efforts and due diligence in terms of accountability would bring us success in our education reform endeavors. As I have mentioned in my previous contributions to this dialogue, it is crucial that we do not lose sight of the fact that we need people who have impecable human factor quality to make the plan work. We must always keep this in mind and make sure that the plan has room in it to develop the quality of people we need to make it succeed--even exceedidng our wildest dreams and expectations!
