Why should being a productive citizen be in contradiction with having consideration of the common good? Of course there is negative productivity. I would think that producing people dependent other people's productivity is contrary the common good. I don't know what you mean by wanting individual "who are in command of themselves." I want individuals to be responsible for themselves as much a possible.

Living in a university town, I am well aware of the prevailing wisdom of most college professors toward " the social, political AND economic systems of our country." Unfortunately promoting their ideological agenda has displaced developing the intellectual and critical thinking skills of students necessary to "examine and reflect" upon those and other complex issues.
