  • Topic: Student Learning

We need to provide opportunites for students to "opt in" as well as "opt out." If you think students only face the choice of "work" or "college" after graduating from high school, you are living in a dream world. Many students face a necessity to work long before finishing high school; many face the choice of parenthood in the same time frame. Many others will never have the chance to "work" let alone attend college, outside of custody. Does the Master Plan have any provision for education in the state's massive juvenile detention system, or in the even more massive "correctional" system? The purpose of education in this society must be not only the perfection of the individual but the transformation and betterment of the society engaging its young (and older) learners in the process of education.
