How I heard about Network Democracy:

I received e-mail information from 2 sources simultaneously (1) a colleague (2) the CIVTALK listserv.

My experience in this area:

I am the Co-Director of the Pacific Southwest Regional Technology in Education Consortium. We are just beginning our second year of funding as one of six RTECs nationally working to support schools and communities to integrate advanced technologies into K-12 education and adult literacy. Of the 6 RTECs we have a unique interest/expertise in at least two areas: (1) multilingual/multicultural access and uses for advanced technologies. (2) bridging communication and collaboration between community access networks (including community centers) and the public education community. We work closely with communities which are multilingual, low-income, rural and underserved. We bring background in research and practices to support participation by diverse communities.

What I hope to learn:

We would use this opportunity to strengthen our own expertise and ability to provide good information and services to schools and communities regarding the opportunities/threats of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. We work with diverse audiences which include educational personnel, community members and policy makers.

Additional comments:

We would be interested in disseminating information to our service area and encouraging our sister RTECs in other regions to do likewise.
