At the Commerce Department's "Digital Divide" conference last month, 3Com announced The 3Com Urban Challenge Grant Program, which will provide 10 U.S. cities a total of $1 million in donated products and services where the mayor is committed to utilizing networking technology to enhance educational curriculum and/or public services. You can get the application and other related information directly at www.3com.com/urbanchallenge. Included at this site is fairly in-depth examples of how other cities have built ATM or Gigabit Ethernet metropolitan area networks based on municipal utility involvement or cable negotiation franchises, and what they're doing with those networks.
