A few thoughts from Maine: 1)To serve the entire community, the technology resources concentrated in the schools must be seen as a resource to all. What models of free community use of technology and connectivity are being used? We do an Open Community Session using high school labs, every Thursday evening, 6-9pm. 2)We find ourselves, having delivered basic instruction in skills to all of the staff to whom we have responsibilities(+/-92%), we find that educators, not surprisingly, are still struggling to find truly powerful, process changing uses of networked technology in classroom teaching. What so many educators still hunger for is the opportunity to take advantage of high speed access to look at the resources available. To really make a difference, networked technology must become more than a giant teacher supply catalog in the eyes of a "critical mass". 3)The innovators have moved ahead, making creative use of the incredible possibilities. 4)Many are beginning to move, engaged by the possibilities, but needing time...(10 miles into the woods, 10 miles out) 5)Change is hard, and the toughest part is beyond delivering the Internet to every classroom in America, or at least in Mid-Coast Maine... It is in the development of applications. 6)Networked technology makes it posssible to collaborate across thousands of miles, and yet we are training many educators for whom it is not common practice to collaborate across a 1/2 inch sheetrock wall or through a classroom door... 7)How do we work with teacher preparation institutions to ensure that the massive re-training of staffs such as is going on now in terms of technology need not be repeated when the technology takes a leap?
