Scalable Technical Architecture, etc,

In the process of directing the infrastructure development of various
projects in Memphis, I have been emphatic about keeping our LAN/MAN
architecture in the realm of non-propritary systems, i.e.
ethernet-TCP/IP only. I stay completely way from network management
systems which are scalable or upgradable only if you want to pay the
vendors price. Many vendors love "propritary systems"... it helps
insure their financial future. My policy has been to try and keep it
simple and "free" when possible.

The cost of networking relative to the cable/telephone is not cheap, and
in some cases (states or locations), totally out of line with what cost
should be in my opinion. The new wireless technology needs to be
studies very carefully. This not only offers us a one-time buy-in, but
it will also increase competition in some sectors for the
cable/telephone companies... hopefully lowering future cost.

I will send more later concerning "school-based servers, e-mail
accounts, etc.

Cheers!

Larry
