Welcome to the discussion on Scope and Support. My name is Margaret Honey and I will be facilitating this conversation. The conference organizers have asked us to cover a fair amount of ground in our discussion, including three major issues: scalable technical architectures, scalable structures for human support, and systemic change. Before delving into specifics it might be helpful if we gave a little background on who we are and what our connections to NIE are. I work for a place called the Center for Children and Technology, which is a division of a larger organization called the Education Development Center. We are an educational not-for-profit and CCT's focus is on research and development in the education/technology arena. Our NIE project involves a collaboration with the Union City New Jersey Schools and Bell Atlantic. You can check out the web site at http:www.union-city.k12.nj.us The Union City Schools have been engaged in a comprehensive program of reform and restructuring for the past seven years and have been very successful. They were recognized by their accomplishments by President Clinton and Vice President Gore, who chose Union City as the site to announce their Technology Literacy Challenge initiative. Our mandate in the NIE project is to effectively integrate networked technologies into this reformed environment. This has involved working with the district on the design and build-out of the technical infrastructure as well as helping to develop and sustain the necessary human infrastructure. The details of much of what has been done are available on the Web site. Needless to say, there are many many issues we have confronted and learned about in this effort. But, before we go on to discuss the topics that have been placed before us, please take a few minutes and introduce yourself to the rest of our group. Who are you and where do you work? What is your connection to NIE? What specifically have you been working on in this regard? I look forward to hearing from each of you. Regards, Margaret
