To summarize this discussion turned into a difficult assignment. I've been too portable to keep a running set of notes, or copies of messages. However, to emphasize the high points, I will list a few parting thoughts: 1. It is loud and clear that there is agreement with Gwen on the professionalism of teachers. We need to treat them as such, if anything is to change. 2. Successful programs are based on teachers' being asked what they want and need, and clearly not the "sit and get" professional development programs. 3. Professional development needs to be an integral part of the teacher's work, and not a set aside. 4. Training needs to be localized. 5. Specifically, the NIE aspect of professional development requires special consideration. Stress, and need for support in using technology, can inhibit teacher development. I look forward to a more thorough discussion in Pittsburgh. Several of you provided more information on your programs, which we can share. See you soon.
