My name is Rashidah Hakeem and I am co-moderator for Community 
Networking.  I work at LeMoyne-Owen College, an urban campus in Memphis, 
TN located across the street from LeMoyne Gardens Public Housing 
Project.  I am the curriculum developer and teacher for the MECCA 
Educational Initiative which sponsors a program of computer literacy with 
internet access  at the college to adult and children  residents of the 
housing project. Students are recruited through a number of social 
service agencies and community organizations that also provide a variety 
of services to LeMoyne Gardens residents.
The importance of networking  in this project cannot be overstated 
because we depend  almost solely on networking  with agencies and 
organizations in recruiting students for our program.  The  computer 
literacy instruction is tailored to reflect the goals or  service 
interests of the sponsoring agency or organization.
The project was initiated in April , 1995 with ten  computers and one 
staff person.  The classroom is a shared academic computing lab with a 
movable partition which is closed during MECCA sessions.
