Hi - I am Melanie Goldman, Director of the National School Network project at BBN Corporation. The National School Network is a community of over 400 organizations - schools, institutions, government agencies and corporations who use networking in support of systemic change in education at local levels. Operates the NSN "Exchange" (http://nsn.bbn.com) a national electronic meeting place, pioneering on-line events for students and teachers. The "Exchange" is based on the pioneering model that each member institution is both a consumer and a contributor through the networks, of services and content for the others. Through its experience with the "Exchange" over the past three years, the NSN has learned how to develop, promote, and deliver online activities, attracting participants from all over the country, rural and inner city, helping them integrate the technology into the curriculum, and to share and learn from each other. The NSN has also created a web-based telementoring tool, NetPals, (http://nsn.bbn.com/community/rs_telementor/netpal.shtml) which provides a structured environment and administrative tools to support an iterative exchange between submitters and reviewers. Before coming to BBN, I worked at Harvard University for over 13 years and among other things pioneered the use of the Internet across the campus and worked to get Massachusetts schools online. I was also a member of the Steering Committee that founded and managed the New England Regional network NEARNet starting back in 1989.
