Footnotes

  1. The Bloomfield Bridge is one of two "high-level" bridges in Pittsburgh, so-named because one side of the bridge is at a higher level than the other. In a similar manner the technology provided by CK:P can links disparate groups, including traditional "haves" and "have-nots."
  2. Carlitz, R. and Zinga, M. (1994), "Creating Common Knowledge." CK:P preprint.
  3. For a detailed description of the groups which make up the CK:P collaboration see attachment C.
  4. The Boundary Street Bridge is where the "Cloud Factory" of Michael Chabon's "Mysteries of Pittsburgh" is located. For the purposes of the present proposal this is just another piece of the Internet cloud.
  5. Under the terms of a proposal presently in development the Carnegie Public Library will provide network connectivity via Frame Relay to branch libraries and independent libraries across the county. The cost of this effort is presently estimated to be on the order of 12 million, which will be provided with the assistance of local foundations.
  6. Dialup connectivity is presently available at these branch libraries. The proposed library network will expand this connectivity to Frame Relay and will provide public access to the Internet through this mechanism.
  7. The Smithfield Street bridge crosses the Monongahela River in downtown Pittsburgh. Its design in duplicated in only one other site worldwide.
  8. We thank Tony Rutkowski for introducing us to this evocative term.
