Technical Implementation Committee
Tuesday, December 20, 1994; 10:00 - Noon Meeting Minutes (G. Futoran)

The meeting took place in the Mellon Institute in Room 434. In attendance were Gene Hastings, Myron Lentz, Mike McCafferty, Bob Taylor, Rick Wertheimer, and Gail Futoran as observer.

Rick handed out an agenda, minutes from the last meeting (11/22/94) and an addendum to the minutes: a draft action plan for technical migration developed 12/1/94 by Myron, Rick and Wendy Huntoon.

The meeting began with Gene and Rick bringing the others up to date on the status of wiring at FultonÕs Jancey campus and Phillips and a discussion of the problems CK:P staff have had getting the wiring planned and completed over the past two years. Gene and Myron both expressed the opinion that it was important to establish in-house (PPS) LAN expertise. Rick mentioned that he could provide information on wiring costs, and also offered to show Bob the wiring diagrams he had. It was agreed that Bob would accompany Rick on future walk-throughs of CK:P sites. It was also agreed that someone from MyronÕs staff (Steve Mandarino) would attend the next Ōtermination partyĶ at FultonÕs Hampton campus for the experience.

The meeting then turned to a discussion of the LAN topology at PPS. Rick was ready to order hardware for the PSC-PPS connection. The hardware includes the two modems, the interface cards and the T1 LADS line from Bellefield to PSC. Gene and Bob each provided a room number in their respective buildings (Mellon Room 345 - Board Admin Bldg. Room 35) where the LADS line would be terminated. Rick said he would get the order in for the LADS line and other equipment before winter vacation. They discussed short-term and long-term goals. One short-term goal agreed upon was that Mike should be able to access the Internet from Connelley and Emily Becker should be able to access the Internet from Bellefield through the direct connection to PSC. With respect to long-term goals, Rick said they would order a router for MyronÕs group that would allow expansion in the future to any PPS schools interested in getting an Internet connection. It was understood that some technical details still needed to be worked out (e.g., connecting PPSÕs Novell network to the Internet).

Rick mentioned the February 6, 1995 workshop on server management aimed at providing people from the sites with the knowledge needed to create accounts and handle day-to-day operations (e.g., system refresh). He invited PPS technical staff to observe the workshop even though it might not be as detailed as they would like. Rick said that the site people are already in the process of migrating accounts off of Oberon. Myron mentioned that several of his people - including Bob - did not have Internet accounts. Rick said he would make accounts for them, and he also offered to create a common ŌtechnicalĶ mailing list so that both CK:P and PPS technical staffs could share information.

Myron agreed with the migration action plan in substance. Rick said he would revise the plan based on todayÕs discussion and distribute the revision to the group.

Finally, Rick said he had some travel money in the budget and offered to fund one or two trips per year for someone from MyronÕs staff to attend conferences related to networking. Gene mentioned several upcoming conferences and said he would forward notices to MyronÕs staff. A date for the next meeting was not set.
