Modem Pool Update - March 1, 1996

There is now a functioning PPS modem pool that provides Internet access. The following has been installed:

8 phone lines
8 28.8 modems
Router

The modem pool is presently being tested by the CK:P ed-staff. Here is what we have found so far.

  • The phones are on a rotary that allow a single number to be dialed and it will connect the user with the first available line.
  • The modem pool can support both PPP and SLIP. However, it is not supporting dial-up at this time.
  • Authentification is being done at the router for the few people who are part of the beta testing. Ultimately, this will have to occur through Kerboros.
  • Our testing indicates that the lines work fine and the speed appears not to be a problem. However, we only had 1-2 users on at any given time.

    Next Steps

Once we are satisfied the existing lines and architecture are correct, we will begin the expansion of the modem pool to include more lines and increased functionality.
