Informational Newsletter
Volume 97, Number 3
/projects/ckp/newsletter/v97n3.html
Over the next 7 months, all of the activities associated with CK:P will be
migrated to the District. Much of this activity has been going on behind
the scenes. The first step was moving our users from the Pitt and
CMU modem pools to the PPS modem pool.
We are now ready for the next move - migrating users from oberon
(the original CK:P server) to cats1 (the new PPS server).
Cats1 will be managed by the PPS Division of Computer
Services. This newsletter will explain how the migration will occur and how it will
effect our users.
May 15 - June 1 | Provide information to the users |
7 AM Monday, June 2 | Turn oberon off |
7 AM Monday - Noon Tuesday | No Internet service
available for oberon users |
Noon Tuesday, June 3 | cats1 is turned on |
Changes for Users on Oberon
Using the PPS Modem Pool
- When you login to the PPS Modem Pool, you must use
login@server and your password in order to authenticate.
At the
login prompt oberon users normally type
[smith@oberon]. Now you will have to type [smith@cats1]
Beginning on June 3rd, if you continue to type [smith@oberon] you
will get an authentication failure.
Using Your Oberon Password
-
Your oberon password will work on cats1 with one exception. If your
oberon password is longer than 8 characters, only use the first 8
characters when you authenticate at the modem pool
or login to cats1.
Email Accounts
- If you use an email address of [smith@pps.pgh.pa.us]
nothing will change.
- If you use an email address of [smith@oberon.pps.pgh.pa.us]
then
your new address should be [smith@pps.pgh.pa.us]. This shorter
form
allows you to receive email at the PPS server where you have an account.
One way to guarantee that this is your return address is to configure
Pine. Here are the steps.
-
- Go to Pine
- In the Main Menu, Choose S for setup
- Choose C for config
- Cursor down to user-domain and then hit the return/enter key
- Back space to erase
- Type: pps.pgh.pa.us and then hit the return/enter key
- Choose E to exit setup
This forces pine to use pps.pgh.pa.us as your return address.
- If you are subscribed to a mailing list (listserv) under the address
[smith@oberon.pps.pgh.pa.us] you should unsubscribe from the list
by June 2. When you are logged into cats1 you can resubscribe to the
list with the email address [smith@pps.pgh.pa.us]
- If you use WinQvt or NCSA Telnet you will have to configure a
new session for cats1.admin.pps.pgh.pa.us Directions for how to do
this can be found at:
/projects/ckp/technical/reference/hosts.html
- If you use Eudora, Netscape or other client mailers you will have to
reset your options. The new SMTP and POP
server is cats1.admin.pps.pgh.pa.us
Addressbook
- Your addressbook may have entries in it that are for
[user@oberon.pps.pgh.pa.us] or [user@ckp.edu] You will want
to edit your addressbook to now read [user@pps.pgh.pa.us]
Other Internet Services
- If you have a WWW page on oberon the address will change from
http://oberon.pps.pgh.pa.us/~smith/ to
http://cats1.admin.pps.pgh.pa.us/~smith/ This may affect links on
your page, so check all of your links.
- If you telnet to oberon from another server you will now have to type:
telnet cats1.admin.pps.pgh.pa.us
- If you ftp to oberon from another server you now have to type:
ftp cats1.admin.pps.pgh.pa.us
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What if someone uses my old address for email -
[smith@ckp.edu] or [smith@oberon.pps.pgh.pa.us]?
Answer: The email will bounce back to them with the
statement that the email could not be delivered.
