Education Oriented Mailing Lists

There are many mailing lists that focus on K12 education. Some pertain to curriculum, others discuss assessment and still others raise instructional issues. This week we are highlighting two very popular K12 mailing lists - LM_Net and K12Admin. You might consider subscribing to one of these and receiving their discussion via email. Warning!! These two lists are very active - meaning you will receive a great deal of email daily. Once you subscribe be prepared to login daily, read your mail and delete unwanted messages.

LM_Net

LM_Net is the School Library Media and Network Communications mailing list. The discussion is generally about research on the Internet, school library issues, and learning about information resources.

The following is a typical message to this mailing list.

From:	jtrauge@cello.gina.calstate.edu
To:	lm_net@listserv.syr.edu

To those interested in doing genealogical searching on-line. Several
people recommended ROOTS-L

To subscribe:
	Listserv@mail.eworld.com
In message: Subscribe Roots-L (your name)
	Send mail to : Roots-L@mail.eworld.com

Also recommended were the following USENET newsgroups:
	soc.genealogy.computing soc.genealogy.methods
	soc.genealogy.misc soc.genealogy.surnames

I have not actually followed these instructions myself because I am
not well enough prepared to make the plunge. Please read the following:
Be prepared for over 100 messages a day.
Students should do all the research possible in the family
first--write Great-aunt Lizzie, inspect the family Bible, etc. Then they
should research in books--visit a local genealogy library, LDS Family
History Center, etc. keep the on-line search confined to those questions
based on a firm foundation of previous research.

Thanks to those who answered my letter. Jo Trauger, Fresno, CA.

K12admin

K12admin is a mailing list that discusses administrative educational issues. Topics commonly discussed include discipline, scheduling, restructuring, outcome based education, and jobs.

The following is typical message to this mailing list:

To:	k12admin@listserv.syr.edu
From:	jstjohn@TELEPORT.COM

Schools in our district are developing a plan for early release of
students on two half-days/month to collaborate within buildings on their
school improvement/school restructuring plans, and across buildings on
K-12 articulation and coordination.

If you have experience with release time for planning and staff
development, please share your successes and concerns in presenting this
to parents and the community. We want to present this in a way that will
help parents understand the benefits we expect for their children--and not
have to fight brush fires about it all year.

Help!! Thanks.
