Maintaing Hostfiles - Policy

The host file lists the name and number of every machine in a particular subdomain. Since each site has exactly one subdomain, the hostfile is a list of all of the computers on the LAN at a particular site.

It is important that a hostfile is kept current for several reasons:

• The list will help keep track of the machines at a site.
• When you add a new machine to the net, you must assign it an unused IP address.
• Tech support people can easily locate machines if they have a current list
