PHILLIPS ACTION PLAN: 1994-1995 DRAFT PROJECT SUMMARY As the staff at Phillips embarks on developing the "river" curriculum, it is their intent to utilize the Internet technology to secure information during the curriculum writing phase, as well as, incorporate within the curriculum itself both multicultural and interdisciplinary Internet activities in which the students will engage. CURRICULUM PROJECT In Grades 4 and 5 the students will investigate the following: Ethics policies pertaining to Internet use E-mail used as a communication tool on the Internet Research on CAROLINE Creation of databases Development of home pages for the purpose of putting student work on the Internet IMPLEMENTATION: Smith, Johnson, Halterlein, Davidson, Alano and the Librarian The students will be introduced to the curriculum project outlined above by their teachers. All teachers will review the ethics policies in their classrooms. The Librarian will introduce the Internet and research on CAROLINE. The language arts teacher s will explain e-mail and begin to use it in their classrooms. The science, social studies and math teachers will develop databases with their students. All teachers will assist in the creation of home pages for Mosaic. EVALUATION: The students will demonstrate their expertise/ability in locating "river" titles in library catalogs (i.e., CAROLINE) on the Internet and extracting the essential information needed for an interlibrary loan request for a direct visit to the library (branch) itself. The students will keep a portfolio that: will provide five samples of e-mail correspondence (messages received and sent) includes a printout of information that the students created in a database The students will publish a home page for Mosaic. All teachers will review the ethics policies in their classrooms. The Librarian will introduce the Internet. The language arts teachers will explain e-mail and begin to use it in their classrooms. All teachers will assist in the creation of home pages for Mosaic. EVALUATION: The students will provide three/five samples of e-mail correspondence (messages received and sent) and/or logs of e-mail correspondence. The students will publish a home page for Mosaic. CURRICULUM PROJECT In Grades K and 1 the students will investigate the following: parts of a computer functions of a keyboard the computer as a communciation device home pages for Mosaic IMPLEMENTATION: Fleishman, Sing, Romeo, and the Librarian The teachers will teach the parts of a computer and keyboard function keys. The teachers will facilitate e-mail communication between students and other classes. The teachers will assist in the creation of home pages for Mosaic. EVALUATION: The students will label the parts of a computer. The students will demonstrate use of the keyboard function keys. The students will publish a home page for Mosaic. SUPPORT PLAN *assistance from the CK:P staff on using the computer hardware and software *ongoing inservice training at Phillips to determine level of support and needs on a monthly basis
