 Curriculum Projects
 
 I. Daily News
 
 Each morning a different group of children will briefly report local,
 national, international, sports, weather.  This will be accomplished in
 the following way: 
 
 - homeroom students of teachers trained in Internet
 
 - news will be gathered in the morning before school,
 during lunch or after school using computers in the library 
 - rotation by homeroom on a monthly basis
 -Read over the school intercom in the morning during Homeroom Period

EVALUATION:  A comparison of the quality, interest and motivation of the 
student's News Broadcast to students who do not use the internet to 
prepare news reports.
 
 II. Grade 4/5 Animals and the Zoo
 
 This is a year long interdisplinary unit involving animal classification;
 animals in their habitats around the world; animals that are extinct and
 endangered; business related to animals; laws related to animals; ways
 animals serve humans; zoo trips; cul minating projects, research, and
 Internet journals. 
 
 Teachers: Reeder, Nelson, Brown, Holbrook, Rose, Hator and Berdnik
 
 Planning Model
 
 September: Preperation: The Meta curriculum
 October: Animal Classification
 November: Animals in the habitats around the world
 December: Animals in various time periods
 January: Animals in various time periods
 February: Businesses Related to animals
 March: Businesses related to animals
 April: Laws related to animals
 May: Ways animals serve humans
 June: Culminating Programs
 
 Computers: One in the above teachers' classrooms and two in the library.
 
NUMBER OF STUDENTS:  The students will work in pairs, at the computer,
sharing roles of problem solver and reseacher.  The other two members of
the group will work on their journals and other Total Language Activities. 
These pairs will rotate computer time as predetermined by the classroom's
computer time schedule. 
 
 Support: Westinghouse (SAM) student experts, Rick Wertheimer, Herb
Bailey, Dr. Dan Dzubek from the Pittsburgh Zoo.  Support will include
training of teachers at Fulton, training of parent volunteers to be
experts in the classroom, SAM students visiting F ulton and helping the
students. 
 
 Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of
 their projects. 
  a) Quality of writing; 
  b) Number of resources; 
  c) Cooperative Group Rating Sheets 
  d) Oral Presentation -Written form and use of another media
  

 III. Rivers (Clusters)
 
 Teachers: Baker, Bonner, Desure, and Rose

 Computers: One in the above teachers' classrooms and two in the library.
 
NUMBER OF STUDENTS:  The students will work in pairs sharing the roles of 
problem solver and reseacher.

 Product:
 
 - Model of the Three Rivers
 - email correspondences with children living near the rivers
 - shared data on rivers via electronic field trips
 - Internet Journal
 
 Support: Rick Wertheimer at Fulton to train teachers, parent volunteers
 
 Collaborators: Phillips Elementary School, Ruth Martin, McCleary
 Elementary School, Judith Gold
 
 Evaluation: Students final project and their Internet Journal
 
 
IV  HARVEST (Cluster 2)

TEACHERS:  Lane, Rose, Brindle, Baker

COMPUTERS: One in each of the above teachers' classrooms and two in the 
library


PRODUCT: Internet Journal
	Field trips to surrounding areas for hands-on learning
	E-main as a communication tool

SUPPORT:  Parent Volunteers trained by Richard Wertheimer
	  Barry Applbaum

COLLABORATORS: Judith Gold, Vision 21

EVALUATIONS:  The students will keep a portfolio that consists of E-mail 
correspondences, Internet Journal, and development of the final projects.


V.  EARTH DAY (YEAR LONG UNIT)  CLUSTER 3


TEACHERS: Smith, Baker, Rose, Brindle, Applbaum

COMPUTERS:  One each of the above teacher's classroom and two in the library

NUMBER OF STUDENTS:  Working in groups of four - two (2) at the computer 
alternating as Keyboarder and researcher and two (2) making journal entries.

PRODUCT:  Children's conference, internet log, Newsletter, sharing data, 
portfolios and student initiated oral presentations.

SUPPORT:  Parent Volunteers and Judith Gold

COLLABORATORS:  Community Volunteers, Peer Experts from Jancey Campus, 
Zoo, PA Game Commission, PA Fish Commission, PA. Forrestry Commission and 
Recycling Groups

EVALUATION:  Publication of a class newsletter, student intiated projects 
and research
