CARRICK'S ACTION PLAN PROJECT SUMMARY Selected tenth grade students will develop a career portfolio incorporating written responses, research, logs of Email contact with mentors, journal entries describing their use of other Internet resources (newsgroups, mailing lists, information on gophers) and a self-evaluation of their career discovery. Students will utilize all available computer technology to develop their portfolios both on-line and as hard copy. CURRICULUM PROJECT Tenth grade students will investigate career possibilities that mesh with their individual interests. The ultimate product of the research will be a career portfolio. All tenth graders will work on career investigation and the development of a career p ortfolio. A selected group will use Internet for research and computer technology for storage of their portfolios. They will utilize the following: * ethics policies pertaining to Internet use; * Email as a communication tool to connect with career mentors; * newsgroups to retrieve information about careers; * mailing lists to communicate with relevant professionals; * gopher for research; * Mosaic for research; * libraries for research; * WAIS for research; * keyword searches in Veronica, PenPages, etc., for career research; * Fetch to download files. The selected group will also produce a hard copy of the portfolio and present it for evaluation in May. IMPLEMENTATION SCENARIO Work on the portfolio, as well as Internet training, will be initiated in the World Cultures classes. Activities will occur throughout the day and before and after school. September: 1. Administer an interest survey such as Career Decision Making. 2. Have students complete "Examine Your Interests Using the Interest Survey." October through December: 1. Assign research. 2. Discuss terminology and the ethics policy. 3. Assign passwords and teach students how to get on-line. 4. Have students choose mentors from the list and work on mentoring log "Communication with My Mentor." January: 1. Have students complete vital statistics of their chosen career. 2. Have students write "A Day in the Life of My Mentor." January through March: 1. Have students use resources on the Internet to explore the career in depth and to make contacts within the field. 2. Where possible, plan a career shadowing experience. April through May: 1. Have students examine and reflect on their portfolio contents. 2. Have students prepare a written plan for a presentation for Career Awareness Day. 3. Participate in Career Awareness Day. June: 1. Have students prepare portfolios for assessment. 2. Have students participate in portfolio assessment. 3. File portfolio in Carrick High School Career Center. EVALUATION: During the course of the year students' portfolios will be evaluated at the end of each report period. In May each portfolio and each presentation will be evaluated by separate four-point rubrics. These evaluations will be conducted by mentors, teacher s, counselors, CK:P staff, and other students. SUPPORT PLAN We will need the following from CK:P staff: * initial training on equipment for all involved Carrick staff, * help using existing equipment effectively if installation of new equipment has not occurred by September 7, * on-site visits as determined by need, * help with establishing the benchmarks for evaluation and rubrics for final assessment.
