Presented by the Irish Interest Group of the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh--The scheduled sesquicentennial commemoration of the great Irish famine 1845-1849 in the tri-state area!
Whether your family came from Northern Ireland or the Republic, this conference is designed to increase your understanding of why they came and to pinpoint effective resources for your research!
Irish Genealogical Project (IGP):
Chris O'Mahony,
Ph.D., Director of the Limerick Regional Archives and representing the
Irish History Foundation Society will describe the most significant
development in Irish Genealogy: the computerization, indexing and
microfilming of all pre 1900 church and civil records in the entire
island of Ireland into one major database! This means quicker, more
efficient and effective research services for those of Irish descent to
trace their Irish ancestry.
The Great Famine:
Kevin Whelan, Ph.D.,
Bicentennial Research Fellow, Royal Irish Academy and Newman Scholar,
University College, Dublin, will define new perspectives on the immense
impact of this event; its effect on economics, demographics, agriculture,
sociology and politics. He will explore related themes of starvation,
typhus, cholera and emigration. You'll come away with a greater
understanding of why your ancestors came to America.
Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh:
Michele O'Leary,
M.P.H., RSM, the Institute's President will relate the extraordinary
success of "The Peace Project," an informal name for the purpose of the
Institute: to promote mutual understanding between the Catholic and
Protestant traditions of Northern Ireland and to assist in the economic
development of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Sr. O'Leary details the
programs that work, providing training, personal development,
reconciliation, marketing and cultural exchange.
Regional Research: The Pittsburgh Catholic
Diocese.
