DIED: 14 December 1961.(34)
BURIED: Harwinton, Connecticut.(35)
- Major Hornbostel's architecture dominated the Pittsburgh scene in
the first third of this century. It was he who designed the original
buildings which now mingle with modern architecture on the campus of
Carnegie Institute of Technology [now Carnegie
Mellon University]. (36)
- Architect of the City-County Building. (37)
- Architect of Rodef Shalom. (38)
- Architect of Webster Hall. (39)
- Architect of Soldiers and Sailors
Memorial. (40)
- However his critics may regard his early architecture, they
concede that Maj. Hornbostel was a man who would fight for his ideas. He
did so in designing for the Smithfield Congregational Church (Downtown)
its unique spire, one of the first architectural uses of aluminum. (41)
