The writer's job is not to be brilliant, or to be the person who always knows,
but it's to be the one who recognizes the patterns
that remind us of our obligations and our dreams.--Barry Lopez

"I am a writer who travels," Barry Lopez explains. His travels--to Australia, the North and South Poles, Asia and Africa--have inspired award-winning fiction and nonfiction, establishing his reputation as an authoritative writer on the environment and natural history.

However, Lopez's numerous books, magazine articles and stories transcend his subjects, garnering praise for poetic, descriptive language and philosophical content. His first major work of nonfiction, Of Wolves and Men, was recognized with several awards for excellence in natural history and humanitarian writing. In 1986, Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape received nine distinguished honors, including the National Book Award.

His former editor at Scribners best summarizes the author's work: "...He nourishes us in a way we very much need, trying to restore our sense of place, our sense of humility in the face of the natural world. He wants us to regain our sense of direction and our sense of how to live well." (Publishers Weekly)
