North Side: North Shore

"A desirable residential community in the days of the Pennsylvania Canal, the North Shore became primarily a commercial and industrial area with the construction of the railroad. Its position between the railroad lines and the Allegheny River brought an influx of factories and warehouses and promoted the conversion of many Greek Revival-style houses to mercantile and transient use. In 1903 Exposition Park at School Street and Shore Avenue was the site of the first baseball World Series, when Pittsburgh lost to Boston. Three Rivers Stadium stands in the North Shore today, a first step in the City's continuing revitalization of the neighborhood." (41)
"The east end of the North Shore is dominated by the historic H. J. Heinz Plant, a mainstay of the community's economy for many years." (42)
