No death within recent years has removed a man more widely known in the two cities, than that which ended the long and busy life of Henry Kleber, founder of the music firm that bears his name. The robust vitality of the man, his phenomenal good health and activity of mind and body rendered his passing away a shock to all, despite the fact that his years had extended well beyond the alotted limit. It was on Saturday morning last, after a sudden and severe siege of "grip," that Mr. Kleber breathed his last, at his home in Allegheny. He died leaving a name that has become a household word in Western Pennsylvania as associated with one of the most prosperous and progressive music firms in the country, and he was a man to be sorely missed not only in the circles of his relatives and descendants, but by the thousands that have known him in a purely business way. His marked personality, his forceful character, strong likes and dislikes; intense love of music, and a signal ability as a singer, musician, composer and business man, were traits that united to render him a conspicuous member of musical, social and business circles for a period extending over more than three generations. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1816, coming to this city when a child, and at an early age manifesting his talents as a musician, teacher and composer. In 1845, with his brother, the late Augustus Kleber, he established the firm of H. Kleber & Bro., which, for half a century, has enjoyed a prosperous career. In the necessarily brief limits of this notice, an extended review of the worth and works of Henry Kleber cannot be given. His wife, who was Miss Manns, sister of Prof. James Manns, of Allegheny, died five years ago. The surviving children of the deceased are Mr. H. Kleber, Jr., Mr. L. O. Kleber and Mrs. Ida Todd, wife of Dr. F. L. Todd. The impressive funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the residence of Dr. Todd, Sandusky Street, Allegheny, where Mr. Kleber had resided during the later years of his life.
