Manchester is a neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Settled in the 1830s, Manchester became a borough in 1843. In 1867, it was annexed by the city of Allegheny, which, in turn, was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907. Now listed in the National Catalogue of Historic Districts, Manchester was, in the late 19th century, a blend of opulent Victorian residences and heavy industry. The 1960s witnessed major redevelopment in Manchester, giving rise to strong and effective community activism.
This site is a joint collaboration of Information Renaissance and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. With the support of City and Federal agencies, Information Renaissance is undertaking an effort to explore the concept of a "wired neighborhood" in conjunction with new housing now under development in Manchester. Complementing the creation of an electronic infrastructure, Carnegie Library hopes to work with community organizations and residents to put online a virtual and usable portrait of Manchester through historic records, photographs and oral histories.
