Biography
E. J. Josey is one of the giants in the profession of Librarianship and one of the "statesmen" of the African-American community.
Past-President of the American Library Association and Professor Emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Library and Information Sciences, Dr. Josey has been the recipient of an infinite number of awards. Almost as extensive are the books and articles that he has authored and edited. A mentor to a generation of librarians, a leader in the struggle for Civil Rights, an American voice opposing apartheid in South Africa, Dr. Josey has used his prominence within the Library field to advocate justice and the intellectual betterment of all peoples.
His career is celebrated in the collection, E. J. Josey: An Activist Librarian. Among his books are: The Black Librarian in America, Handbook of Black Librarianship, What Black Librarians Are Saying and Libraries in the Political Process. In the course of his career he has been fortunate to meet with spirits like James Baldwin and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In a very active retirement E. J. Josey remains tireless in his commitment to the value of libraries in America and worldwide.
